When you look around you, you will notice that things are changing, same thing with software update and upgrade. Your prepaid (electric) meter is not left out of this changes.

Recently, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has urged citizens with prepaid meters to update them before November 2024 due to a global software update that will affect all prepaid meters. It will cause meters to stop accepting old tokens unless they are upgraded.

In order to make prepaid electricity vending systems more secure and Token Identifier (TID) rollover compliant, customers with prepaid meters will be required to upgrade their meters in a simple process outlined below.

NOTE:

Not all DisCos have commenced the meter update process so if you have not been notified by your DisCo, you can recharge your meter as usual. When your DisCo notifies you, simply follow the instructions below.

Users who have been notified but failed to update their meters before the said date won’t be able to recharge their prepaid meters.

Updating is easy and free. It requires 2 free Key Change Tokens (KCTs) and some DisCos have already commenced issuing them.

The update will not affect the units in your meter nor will it make your meter run faster than usual.

Please follow these steps to upgrade your meter:
1. Purchase an electricity/energy token:
When you do this, you will receive 3 tokens. The first 2 are the key change tokens and the 3rd (last) is your purchased electricity token.

2. Enter the key change tokens:
On your meter, enter the two KCTs (KCT1 & KCT2) one after the other, then the 3rd token, which is your electricity token.

3. And just like that, your meter upgrade is now complete.

Please note:
This upgrade will not affect your current electricity tariff rate and getting your KCT is free of charge so disregard any message that may ask you to pay for it.
