Spring cleaning anyone?

Anyone love how it feels when everything is tidy but get really overwhelmed just thinking about it? Feeling like you just don’t have time for all of the projects?

We are raising our hands!

To help with the overwhelm we think one step you can take is to buy yourself back some time by doing  one less thing for your child. This will help your child strengthen executive functioning skills as well!

This is a great time of year to evaluate where you can take small steps back and help your child become more independent.

It can be hard to know if you are doing too much or too little supporting your child so we like to look at the evidence.

At the start of the school year did you set a goal for your child to always  take out notices from their folder?

Was there a goal for emptying out lunch boxes and putting them on the counter to be packed for the next day?

Did you say that you weren’t going to remind them every day to grab their water bottle?

Was there a conversation about being more independent knowing what day of the week they needed to bring their instrument to school?

It is time for you to consider where you can step back so that your child can gain independence during these remaining months of school.

We are not saying just suddenly stop what you are doing because your child may not have the skills “yet” to be fully independent.

We are recommending you assess with your child, see where you can step back, and create strategies with your child for making it happen.

This might be really hard if you like to be in control of things!

Once you feel like your  child has the skills in place it is time to take tiny steps back. Sometimes there are bumps in the road but this is also where the learning happens for your child.

You got this and today is the day to start!
