If you are making your way to South Africa’s second-largest province this festive season, here are some hidden gems to uncover and explore.

Storms  River Village

Forming part of the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route, Storms River Village boasts a unique charm. There are various adventure activities, lovely restaurants and accommodation options, thus making it a convenient stopover when exploring the Garden Route.

You can also access the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park to enjoy the beauty of nature and the indigenous forest.

Additionally, you can try out a range of outdoor activities within and around the village. These include hiking, biking, blackwater tubing and even the world’s highest commercial bungee jump.

Mzamba Forest

Visible only during low tide, the ancient Mzamba Forest is found along the wild coast near Port Edward.

Over 85 million years ago, trees were washed onto the beach by the river. As such, the fossilised logs are embedded in rocks and exposed in a series of prominent reefs. This wood was once a part of the forest, before being accrued downstream by rivers and waterlogged in the shallows of the coast.

You can go on a hike and spend some time exploring these fossilised trees along the beautiful Eastern Cape coast.

Hogsback

If you desire an outdoor mountain escape, head over to Hogsback. There is plenty for you to do and explore, including satisfying your inner-shopaholic with a visit to the local arts and crafts shop.

You can also take a walk to the scenic Kettle Sprout Waterfall, hire a mountain bike and explore the forest trail. For foodies, a great dining experience at one of the local eateries awaits.

Ultimately, the area enables one to enjoy life’s tiniest pleasures such as  tranquil moments in a garden surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty.

Langkloof Valley

Langkloof is filled with mountain vistas and orchards, making it the perfect area for a scenic roadtrip.

This lesser-known region forms part of Route 62 and passes towns like Krakeel, Twee Rivier and Kareedouw.

On offer are activities such as mountain biking. One can also explore the area on horseback.

Graaff-Reinet

Being the oldest town in the province, Graaff-Reinet is a hidden gem which is of much interest. For the eager explorer, it is a treasure trove with lots to uncover and enjoy.

From museum visits to delicious food at the local eateries, there truly is something for everyone. Worthy of exploration is the Camdeboo National Park where you can enjoy a self-guided game drive.

Additionally, head to the scenic Valley of Desolation where you can marvel at the sight of different species of birdlife, as well as an array of flora and fauna.
