Exploring the concept of one’s seemingly inescapable roots, “Roots” is a powerful new track from Cedar Bend, a band based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A momentum-filled journey spans from lo-fi folk-friendly contemplation to dynamic rock anthemics, making for a ceaselessly engaging production.
“I can’t go home again, it will split me into two,” the opening vocals lament alongside steady acoustical strums. Reminders of one’s roots remain a stirring concept, from the initially contemplative folk sound to a rousingly eclectic rock appeal thereafter. Bursting guitars lend a classic-rock nostalgia thereafter, leading into a piano-touched “I lost control again,” facing of reality; the acceptance of personal transformation proves stirring, here and into a second half that wholly embraces the amped-up rock fervency, alongside brassy undercurrents. “Roots” is a compelling success from Cedar Bend.
