This E36 BMW M3 Dressed Up As A Volvo 162 Packs An E39 M5’s V8

When recreating replica cars, particularly those based on modern vehicles, maintaining the visual resemblance of the original can be challenging. That isn’t an issue with this Volvo 162 replica, however, which packs modern BMW running gear under its classic-looking bodywork.

Although Volvo never officially produced the 162 model, except for a single prototype, the owner of this particular car took a unique approach. Instead of simply chopping off two doors from a 164, they decided to base it on an E36 BMW M3, opting for a different and distinctive direction.

As a result, all the bodywork was done from scratch, and quite impressively, we may add. While the end result may not be to everyone’s taste, there’s no denying the build was carried out with a great deal of craftsmanship. The vintage styling combined with the high beltline of a modern car gives it a profile akin to something like the David Brown Speedback GT. Unfortunately, the interior is almost all BMW, with the only exception being a 162C badge on the steering wheel, but we can give it a pass given all the work done to the exterior.

In addition to its Swedish sheet metal, the car also packs a V8 from an E39 M5. In stock form, this engine makes 394 hp (400 PS / 294 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. That was enough to propel the larger M5 sedan from naught to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 4.8 seconds, so we suspect this car could make the run a bit quicker.

Not only that, but it’s paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, keeping the engagement factor high. And seeing as it’s based on an E36 M3, it also has the driving dynamics of one of the best cars BMW ever made, so it should be a treat in the corners too.
