Noto Airport closes amid 7.6 magnitude earthquake

A major earthquake of 7.6 magnitude has struck the north central Japan region on Monday, 1 January 2024.

Noto Satoyama Airport (NTQ) has subsequently closed with all scheduled flights cancelled as a result.

The Japanese public broadcaster NHK has advised that the tsunami warnings are now in place for western coastal regions, following the quake which raised concerns of large wave activity along the Sea of Japan.

21 earthquakes 4.0 magnitude or more

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, as of 21 earthquakes which registered 4.0 magnitude or above struck the central Japan region over a short period of approximately 90 minutes today.

As a result, the agency issued tsunami warnings for three coastal prefectures – Ishikawa. Niigata, and Toyama. The authorities have urged residents in the affected area to move to higher ground.

Noto Satoyama Airport, also known as Noto Airport or Wajima Airport, is a small domestic airport located on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. It’s situated about 6.4 kilometers south-southeast of the city of Wajima.

The airport is relatively small, with a four-story terminal building and two jetways. It primarily serves as a gateway to the Noto Peninsula, a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful scenery and traditional Japanese culture.

The airport is served by two daily flights to and from Haneda Airport in Tokyo, operated by ANA.
