Recreating Art – Fun and learning at home

Creative solutions in tough times! Most of us are stuck at home during the worldwide health crisis due to the Coronavirus. In some countries, lucky us, we can go out to the park and enjoy a long walk or a bike ride. Nothing too wild though. Many of you can’t even do that. In some other countries like Italy or Spain people can go out on the streets only to buy groceries or to got the doctor.

Enjoying culture has been drastically reduced to online tours on the websites of some famous museums or watching a documental in Netflix if you can call this culture. Theaters, musicals, movies or museums has been closed now for weeks and will remain so for a couple of weeks more.

But some of the few things I have found profoundly interesting and even enjoyed during this quarantine is the ability of the humanity to find ways to entertain themselves. When feeling bored, creativity is at its best!

Funny memes, music concerts and shows in the balconies, crazy workouts with toilet paper rolls… really, you can find now in the social media all kind of inventions, games, challenges to relieve the routine and boredom for a couple of hours, at home, without going out, without special material.

And so, some museum started some time ago to challenge people to post photos of themselves recreating their favorite works of art. The challenge got a bit of a viral and «people responded with a lot of enthusiasm and flooded social media with their unique artistic interpretations» (https://www.sadanduseless.com/recreated-art/).

And after 6 weeks of quarantine I decided to accept the challenge with my partner and my three daughters. We spent a whole weekend searching up for famous paintings that we could recreate, making costumes out of sheets, normal clothes or whatever we could find at home, hair styles and making up.

It was real quality family time and it was in fact not only a lot of fun. It was also very educative indeed. My kids are 10, 6 and 2 and to be honest, they were not yet bothered about art. They didn’t know who Velázquez, Frida Kahlo or Van Gogh were. Actually they didn’t even know the Mona Lisa. After the many hours recreating these paintings, they were truly interested. They were curious about both the artists and their works. And curiosity is always always the best way to learn.
