Why Pocket Doors Are a Game-Changer for Ensuites

When it comes to adding an ensuite, space is often the biggest challenge.

Bedrooms only have so much floor area to spare, and a standard swinging door can eat up valuable room that you’d much rather use for the essentials: a shower, a basin, or even just enough breathing space to move around comfortably.

That’s where pocket doors come in.

What Is a Pocket Door?

A pocket door slides neatly into the wall cavity, disappearing out of sight when open.

Unlike a traditional hinged door, it doesn’t require any clearance space to swing in or out.

For compact ensuites, this simple difference can be the key to unlocking layouts that would otherwise feel cramped or impractical.

The Benefits of Pocket Doors in Ensuites

1. Space Saving

Every square foot count in an ensuite. A standard hinged door can take up to 0.8m² of floor space — space that could otherwise fit a towel rail, storage cabinet, or simply give you room to dry off comfortably after a shower.

2. Flexible Layouts

Because you don’t have to plan around a swinging door, you have far more freedom in choosing & positioning your fixtures inside the ensuite, as well as bedroom items outside it.

3. A Sleek, Modern Look

Pocket doors feel clean and contemporary. They don’t intrude on the bedroom or bathroom, and they can be fitted with soft-close mechanisms for a premium feel.

Things to Consider

• Wall construction: Pocket doors work in stud walls, so if you have a solid wall a section will need to be removed to install the mechanism.
• Wall width: Pocket door kits are often made to suit stud walls that are either made from 3×2” or 4×2” timber studs. Be sure you get the right one.

• Door size: Most pocket door kits do NOT come with the door, so you need to ensure that the door size (width, depth and height) suit the pocket door kit chosen.

• Sound insulation: Some pocket door kits can be upgraded with better seals if noise transfer is a concern, though in general pocket doors will not be as good as regular doors in this area.
• Quality matters: Cheap kits can rattle or stick. We only recommend tried-and-tested systems that slide smoothly and last for years (see below).
• Door furniture: Because the doors slide into the wall, flush handles have to be fitted, as regular handles would foul onto the casing as the door slides into the wall. If the door slides into the wall fully, you will benefit from a ‘finger pull’ on the doors exposed edge.

• Additional bits: Some kits have soft close pistons; some can accommodate fire doors (and legally maintain fire ratings) and some are designed to fit flush without the need for subsequent architrave:

We’ve used pocket doors on several ensuite projects where a standard hinged door would have made the space feel unusable.

By reclaiming that clearance zone, we’ve been able to fit in larger showers, better storage, or simply create a layout that feels less compromised.

We used this off the shelf pocket door kit to help Asiya add an ensuite to her bedroom, replacing a set of wardrobes with a tiny but perfectly formed ensuite shower room.

This meant that there would be more space around the bed when put back in place.

At Rachels we used the same kit to achieve a space saving cloakroom with just a WC and basin.

There is no way a door could have opened inward into this space and it would have made space very tight round the bed if it opened out!

At Trevors we utilised a frosted glass door (by buying a glass door + pocket door kit together online from Eclisse.)

As well as saving space, this served to let natural light into the room, and as the door didn’t face the main bedroom area, privacy wasn’t really an issue.
