Applying for a Saskatchewan Driver’s Licence or Identification Card

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive as a Motor Licence Issuer is “How do I get a Saskatchewan Photo Identification or Driver Licence?”

The first time you apply for a Saskatchewan driver’s licence or ID card, you will be asked to show documents that prove your identity, residency and entitlement to be in Canada.  These requirements align Saskatchewan with North American standards to help protect everyone in our province from identity theft and ensure that the IDs are only issued to those who are in our country legally.

To prove your identity, you will need a minimum of two pieces of original identification to establish your full legal name, complete birth date and signature.  To prove your Saskatchewan residency, you will need a minimum of two supporting documents that show your name and civic address or land location (no PO Box numbers) and must be dated within the last 90 days.  To prove your entitlement to be in Canada you will typically need one original document to show this.  If you were born in Canada, your Canadian birth certificate will satisfy this requirement.  If you were born outside of Canada, your foreign passport (if not a permanent resident or Canadian citizen) and Citizen and Immigration document will be required.  A complete list of acceptable identification and residency documents can be found on the SGI website under Licensing.

Some common scenarios of how to meet the requirements are:

• If you are a customer under 18 and needing just photo ID, acceptable ID, like birth certificate, valid Canadian passport or valid foreign passport with CIC document can be used in conjunction with a parental/guardian signature form available at an SGI issuing office.
• If you are a high school driver education student, the most common documents presented are a Canadian birth certificate and a signature form for first time drivers between the ages of 15 and 18 (Guarantor form) with sections A and C completed by a parent.
• If you are an adult from Saskatchewan or Canada who has never held a driver’s licence, any of the following combination of documents from the list on the SGI website will meet all the requirements – a valid Canadian birth certificate or Canadian passport, another document that proves your legal name, birth date or signature, and two documents that prove you are a Saskatchewan resident
• If you are a licensed driver from another Canadian province, any of the following combination of documents will meet all the requirements – an out-of-province driver’s licence, a Canadian birth certificate or Canadian passport and two documents that prove you are a Saskatchewan resident.
• If you are from outside of Canada, the following combination of documents from the list on the SGI website will meet all the requirements – a valid passport from your country of residence, one of the CIC documents and two documents that prove you are a Saskatchewan resident.
