This week we hand over to Faith Frost to hear about her recent experience of presenting on the Crossing the Line findings.

A co-presentation with Sue Briggs: friend, colleague and lead patient and public involvement (PPI) representative on the Crossing the Line research study

I was delighted to be invited to speak at the Admiral Nurse Forum on 2nd October to discuss our Crossing the Line research study. The forum was titled, ‘Navigating relationships in Admiral Nursing: the key to successful dementia care’, so it was a brilliant fit for our study which explored the experiences of family carers providing personal care for people living with dementia.

Our friend, colleague and lead PPI representative on the study, Sue Briggs, co-presented with me on the day. It is always such a joy to present with Sue, her insights into being a family carer for her husband are inspirational, informative and heartfelt. Despite hearing Sue speak many times now, I still learn so much from her and she gives me so much more to think about as a researcher. Sue very kindly agreed to film some of her experiences which are hosted on our project website, you can listen to her speaking about supporting her husband with shaving.

We were lucky to be able to attend the morning session of the conference, and found it particularly inspiring to participate in the workshop ‘Promoting emotional intimacy in couples where one person is living with dementia’, hosted by Laura Birch, Lead Admiral Nurse at East Cheshire NHS Trust. We had time to think about what intimacy meant to us and others, discuss examples of where intimacy has been encouraged or discouraged between couples, and talk about the Intimacy and Sexuality Expression Preference Tool. Laura is working towards a PhD on this subject, and we wish her all the very best with her research.

Thank you to the Admiral Nurse community who gave us such wonderful feedback on the Crossing the Line study. We were delighted to be contacted with requests for physical copies of the information booklets designed for family carers, and with requests for our recent journal article we have had published. We really hope the outputs from our study help to support you and the families you work with in practice. We are also thankful for the discussions around future directions for research and further translation and adaptations of the research findings.

To all the Admiral Nurses, keep up your amazing work!
