It’s a way of saying that the leadership has lost the trust of those they are supposed to be leading. As Scott Sexton used it in his most recent column in the Winston-Salem Journal, it’s an apt “sports analogy” of what is happening in the WSFCS school system.

As was mentioned in the last part of Sexton’s commentary thanks to an unnamed educator,

On the website of the Winston-Salem Journal (and probably in its printed edition tomorrow) is this report:

Three weeks from today, fall sports teams can officially have practice. Locker rooms will be used. For many schools, those fall sports are a source not only of revenue for school functions, but a foundation of building community and learning opportunities for involved students. The coaches who run those locker rooms and the parents / advocates who help resource those locker rooms will be doing what they always have done: supporting students.

No doubt students and their families will keep footing the bill for many of the needs that cannot be purchased by schools like equipment, but those 50/50 raffles, concessions, mattress sales, discount card sales, and other fundraisers that keep happening have that one focus: supporting students.

To “lose a locker room” is a death knell for a team.

Maybe Central Office and the school board should spend some more time around those locker rooms learning from those coaches who lead our teams – coaches who are also teachers and may be getting their own supplements cut if what Sexton says in his commentary might happen.

Go to the games this fall, winter, and spring for all sports. Pay for a ticket. Buy some concessions. Enter the raffles.
