If you are like me, enjoying immersing yourself in the world of books, but always feel the space is not enough or the atmosphere is not right, then you definitely should not miss this! I spent one year transforming my home into a warm private library, and now I can enjoy reading at home every day! Here are some practical tips to help you also create your own book-filled space.
How to choose a suitable space?
- Choosing the space is very important. I considered the bedroom or the whole living room, but in the end I chose the attic. Although the ceiling height is a bit low, this place is not only away from noise, but also full of inspiration.
- Natural light is also very important, so I installed a large glass window in the attic to let sunlight in. Whether it is the first ray of morning sun or the warm light at dusk, it always makes people feel happy.
Tip: If your home does not have an attic, you can also consider a balcony or the end of a corridor. Use these unused quiet spaces and transform them into reading corners.
How to choose suitable study furniture?
- A good bookshelf should bring books closer to you, making them easy to see and easy to reach. So I chose an open bookshelf, which makes reading easier and creates a strong atmosphere of being surrounded by books.
- For seating, I chose a built-in bench seat with thick cushions. It can be used as seating, and the storage space underneath adds extra storage. By the window I also placed a sofa chair, suitable for casual reading.
- The desk should be as large as possible. This creates a strong library-like feeling, as if your vision is suddenly broadened.
Tip: Customize the bookshelf according to needs, for example designing shelves at different heights to make different types of books easier to access, or adding drawers to store miscellaneous items.
How to choose lighting?
- For fixed lighting, I only installed basic recessed lights and ambient hidden lights. Recessed lights are used for focused lighting, and hidden lights are used to create atmosphere. The window area is my favorite place. Under these two types of lighting, reading feels especially good. If paired with herbal tea, it is extremely relaxing. You can also add neon signs as an option to bring a more modern and decorative vibe to the space, especially for creating a cozy or aesthetic reading corner in the evening.
- For desk lighting, I added a large floor lamp. When reading or studying, you need very soft and comfortable light. This floor lamp makes the whole space feel softer and brighter.
Tip: Choosing warm-toned lighting can make people feel more relaxed and is suitable for long reading sessions. You can also place small night lights on bookshelves to create a warmer atmosphere.
How to create atmosphere?
You can also place small decorative items on the desk, such as bookmarks, plants, aromatherapy, tea sets, and handmade crafts. This instantly enhances the cultural atmosphere of the space.
Creating a home library is actually a process of enjoying reading. A good reading space helps us quickly calm down and enjoy the happiness brought by books, peacefully immersing ourselves in our own small world. I hope my sharing can inspire you to turn your home into a warm library as well.
