According to journalist
Oliver Darcy, George Cheeks — who pulled the plug on
Stephen Colbert's show — would not confirm whether or not Jon Stewart's program will continue in 2026. Upon running into the executive after the press conference announcing the closing of Paramount's merger with Skydance and asking about the status of the funnyman's series, Darcy reportedly deflected by telling the reporter it was "day one" of the new company. "I noted that renewals are usually negotiated months in advance. His answer didn't change," Darcy wrote.

When Oliver Darcy questioned George Cheeks about the state of his relationship with
Stephen Colbert after axing his late-night show, the businessman
"signaled that he didn't really know, which said plenty," Darcy wrote. In spite of the fact that he gave Colbert the boot by canceling
The Late Show, Cheeks sang the comedian's praises during the press conference, saying, "We are huge fans of Colbert. We love the show."

Jon Stewart recently touched on the possibility of his show coming to an end following
Stephen Colbert's shocking cancelation. "They haven't called me and said, like, 'Don't get too comfortable in that office, Stewart,'" the 62-year-old joked on his "The Weekly Show" podcast. "But let me tell you something: I've been kicked out of [worse] establishments than that. We'll land on our feet. No, I honestly don't know."

The end of
Stephen Colbert's series caused controversy as Paramount Global needed
Donald Trump and the Federal Communications Commission to sign off on their $8 billion merger with Skydance. While the company insisted there was nothing politically motivated about their decision to end the left-leaning host's program, Trump celebrated the news, writing on Truth Social, "I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings."
