The future of the Mortal Kombat franchise may be colder than fans expected.

While speaking with ScreenRant, Joe Taslim revealed that discussions have taken place regarding a potential Sub-Zero-focused spinoff following the release of Mortal Kombat II. Although nothing has been officially announced, the actor’s comments suggest Warner Bros. has at least considered expanding the story of one of the franchise’s most popular characters.

“There was a conversation about it,” Taslim said when asked about the possibility of a standalone project centered on Sub-Zero.

The brief but intriguing statement has already sparked excitement among longtime fans of the character, who has become one of the standout figures in the rebooted film series.

Taslim first portrayed Bi-Han, better known as Sub-Zero, in 2021’s Mortal Kombat. The character quickly became a fan favorite thanks to the actor’s intimidating performance and the film’s brutal action sequences. Following the events of the first movie, Mortal Kombat II continues the character’s journey while leaning further into the mythology established by the games.

Many fans have long hoped to see a deeper exploration of the Lin Kuei assassin, his rivalry with Scorpion, and the events that eventually transform Bi-Han into the terrifying Noob Saibot. A dedicated spinoff could offer the perfect opportunity to explore those stories in greater detail.

The idea isn’t entirely surprising. Since the launch of the rebooted franchise, Warner Bros. has explored ways to expand the Mortal Kombat universe beyond the mainline films. With characters like Johnny Cage, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero enjoying immense popularity among audiences, standalone projects have often been discussed by fans as natural next steps.

Adding further momentum to the speculation is the fact that Mortal Kombat writer Jeremy Slater has previously revealed that conversations about a third film are already underway. While no official plans have been announced beyond Mortal Kombat II, the franchise appears to have a promising future if audience interest remains strong.

For now, a Sub-Zero spinoff remains just a possibility. However, Taslim’s confirmation that conversations have taken place is enough to keep fans hopeful that Bi-Han’s story may be far from over.

Whether the character continues as Sub-Zero, embraces his destiny as Noob Saibot, or receives a standalone origin story, it’s clear there is still plenty of interest in one of Mortal Kombat’s most iconic warriors.
