Every so often a star walks a step-and-repeat and quietly rewrites the dress code. That is exactly what Shailene Woodley did on Saturday, August 15, when she arrived at the Paradise FYC presentation at the Television Academy’s Televerse 26 festival at the JW Marriott L.A. LIVE wearing something almost nobody wears to an Emmy-season event: denim cutoffs.
And not dressed-up, tailored, pretending-to-be-trousers cutoffs, either. These were the real thing, high-waisted vintage-wash Levi’s with a raw, shredded hem that frayed unevenly across the thigh, worn exactly the way you would wear them to a Sunday farmers market. Woodley tucked in a loose white button-down in a soft, slightly sheer crepe, unbuttoned low at the neckline with the sleeves pushed and rolled to the elbow, so the whole silhouette went slouchy on top and cropped short below.

The styling is what elevated it. A cognac leather belt with a chunky woven buckle cinched the waist and gave the shorts a deliberate, considered anchor. She layered delicate gold chains with a pearl strand and a small teardrop pendant at the collarbone, added a gold link bracelet, a few stacked rings, and finished with pointed-toe pumps in a rich caramel brown that matched the belt and gave her mile-long legs about three extra inches they frankly did not need. Her dark hair fell straight and glossy, her makeup stayed sun-warmed and barely there, and the tan she was working did the rest.

Woodley, 34, is deep in awards mode for Paradise, the Hulu thriller from Dan Fogelman where she plays Annie, the Graceland tour guide introduced in season 2. She joined co-star Sterling K. Brown, director Hanelle Culpepper, casting director Josh Einsohn and visual effects supervisor John Weckworth on the panel, with Julianne Nicholson beaming in by video. Brown revealed the cast had wrapped the third and final season just the night before, and teased that the closing chapter moves fast. “There’s no fat in season three,” he told the crowd.
