It may seem odd that someone cast as a “landscape photograph” is also intrigued by rough-edged urban scenes. To some these subjects may seem as radically different from natural landscapes as can be imagined, but I see connections. In fact, I like to think of photographs like this one from Aberdeen, Scotland as “urban landscapes.”

The geometries appeal to me — here the dark rectangles of doors and windows, the vertical lines of pipes, and the skewed almost-horizontal of the slanting sidewalk. Once this was a brand new building, but today’s weathered version is marked by water seepage, erosion, and a layer of green moss on the sidewalk. The overall colors are cool and dark, but they are interrupted by the bright yellow and red of signs and handbills. It has a kind of urban… visual poetry.
