Being a teacher in Florida (or any other state) can be an incredibly rewarding career path. It is also a career that has clear steps to certification and getting where you want to be. Not to mention, there is a high need for instructors now. So, what requirements are needed to be a teacher in Florida? Here’s what you need to know.

Meet the Basic Education Requirements

To teach in Florida, you need at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. If you’re aiming to teach at the elementary, middle, or high school level, your degree should be in education. In some cases, you might need to get a specialized degree. For instance, if you want to teach elementary students, you might need a degree in Early Childhood Education. Florida also offers alternative certification programs for individuals with non-education degrees. These programs help career changers transition into teaching.

Pass the Required Certification Exams

Florida requires aspiring teachers to pass the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE). The General Knowledge Test (GKT) assesses basic reading, writing, and math skills. The Subject Area Examination (SAE) evaluates expertise in your chosen teaching subject. The Professional Education Test (PEd) measures pedagogical knowledge and teaching principles. Some candidates may also need to pass additional exams, depending on their certification path.

Complete a Teacher Preparation Program

If your degree is not in education, you must complete an approved teacher preparation program. Florida offers multiple pathways, including university-based programs and alternative certification routes. The Educator Preparation Institute (EPI) is a popular option for career changers. These programs cover essential teaching methods, classroom management, and student assessment techniques. Many programs also require in-classroom teaching experience to prepare candidates for real-world instruction.

Apply for a Florida Teaching Certificate

Once you’ve met the educational and testing requirements, you can apply for certification through the Florida Department of Education. The first step is submitting an application online along with transcripts and exam scores. Florida offers a Temporary Certificate for those who meet basic requirements but still need to complete additional coursework or exams. The Professional Certificate is the standard, full certification valid for five years. Background checks and fingerprinting are also required for all applicants.

Gain Classroom Experience

Most teacher preparation programs require hands-on experience through internships or student teaching. Working alongside a mentor teacher helps new educators develop classroom management skills. Florida also offers paid internships and residency programs in high-need subject areas. If you have a Temporary Certificate, you can start teaching while completing additional requirements. Some schools offer mentorship programs to support new teachers.

Advance Your Teaching Career with Additional Certifications

After gaining initial certification, teachers can expand their career opportunities with additional credentials. Earning endorsements in areas like English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) or Reading increases job prospects. Florida also offers leadership certifications for those interested in becoming school administrators. Pursuing a master’s degree in education can lead to higher salaries and specialized roles. Many districts provide professional development programs to help teachers grow.

As a child, I always wanted to become a teacher. While I didn’t follow that career path, I admire individuals who do. This article provides some insight into what requirements are needed to be a teacher. You’ll be able to reach your goals in no time!
