CA Reps Valadao and Kim Have Vowed to Prioritize Extending ACA Subsidies Once the Shutdown Ended. They Must Stand By Their Word.
Sacramento, CA – Ten California Congressmembers including every Republican representative and one Democrat from California, voted yesterday on a short-term government funding plan without extending health care subsidies for lower and middle-income people. Without further action, their votes will result in health care costs soaring for millions of Americans as of Jan 1.
Nearly 2 million people across our state who depend on these subsidies to keep themselves and their loved ones healthy and their small businesses afloat will now have to pay an average of 100% more next year for the same plan. Representatives Valadao and Kim had promised repeatedly that they would prioritize health care for their constituents, but have repeatedly failed to do so.
The following statement comes from the Fight for Our Health coalition, which represents seniors in nursing homes, people fighting cancer, children, veterans, working families, and home care workers.
“At a time when 90% of Californians are worried about the cost of health care – Congress’s refusal to hear our cries for help is shameful. They have made a deliberate choice that will force millions of Californians to either shift money from one bill to the next just to be able to pay for life-saving care – or shoulder the even costlier risk of going without health insurance entirely,” said Amanda McAllister-Wallner, Executive Director of Health Access California.
“California representatives now have a choice to make – actually tackle the affordability problem they promised to address, or kick thousands of their own constituents off of health care coverage and raise costs for everyone,” continued Amanda.” If they can afford to give tax breaks to rich CEOs, insurance companies, and drug corporations in HR 1, then they can afford these ACA subsidies for families and small businesses.”
