IRVINE, Calif. — City of Hope Orange County leaders and stakeholders celebrated the grand opening of Orange County’s only cancer specialty hospital in late November. The new facility will serve the 3.2 million people who call Orange County home and welcomed its first patients on Dec. 1.
The 72-acre academic research campus was built for the sole purpose of saving lives and will connect directly to City of Hope Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center, which features a comprehensive suite of technology for screening, diagnosing and treating cancer. Offering 73 beds across six stories and 164,000 square feet, the new facility completes the care continuum for the county’s largest network dedicated to cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. Together, the facilities form the Irvine Academic Research Campus, where patients can receive fully integrated, multidisciplinary cancer care in one location.
“A beacon of hope, created for and with the community it serves, this place stands as proof that when people come together with courage and conviction, dreams once thought impossible can become real,” said Annette Walker, president, City of Hope Orange County, in a statement.
“This is what it looks like when a community decides that hope will live here,” added Robert Stone, CEO, City of Hope, and Helen and Morgan Chu Chief Executive Officer Distinguished Chair. “We are expanding access to leading-edge treatments, to lifechanging and lifesaving expertise. We are breaking down barriers and showing that hope is within reach in community after community; and it all started here, in Orange County.”
The building’s design advances healing through a hospitality-inspired, human-centered approach. Patient spaces prioritize dignity and comfort with features such as ensuite bathrooms, concealed clinical utilities, large windows offering scenic mountain views, calming material palettes and thoughtful amenities. Treatment spaces include intensive care and medical-surgical units, operating and procedure rooms and a specialized Evaluation and Treatment Center that alleviates the need for patients to go to an ER if they need immediate assessment or care.
More than 40,000 patients have already received care at a City of Hope Orange County facility since 2020. This new campus will allow the organization to further deliver breakthrough acute care, trailblazing research, advanced surgical oncology, immediate care for outpatients and rehabilitative, integrative and spiritual care resources that only a nationally recognized cancer research and treatment organization can provide. The campus will support more than 100 highly specialized surgeons, physicians and researchers with expertise in all types of cancers.
“To the future and current patients who will walk through these doors: know that you’re not alone,” said patient Joanna Mendez during the grand opening ceremony. “This place will hold you, lift you, and fight with you every step of the way; and like me, you will find strength, compassion, and healing within these walls.”
The project team included HOK and Hensel Phelps.
