WESTFIELD — State Sen. John Velis joined members of the Westfield community to celebrate a $100,000 state earmark secured in the FY 2027 state budget this summer for the YMCA of Greater Westfield’s Camp Shepard. During the announcement, Velis was joined by Greater Westfield YMCA CEO Andrea Allard, several YMCA board members, state Rep. Kelly Pease, Westfield Mayor Michael McCabe, and community members.

“The YMCA of Greater Westfield is really an incredible staple in our community and has supported so many youth and families throughout its many years of existence. And there is no doubt that Camp Shepard is a unique and special part of that,” Velis said. “Thousands of children have had the opportunity to experience nature and spend their summers in a safe and enriching way, all because of Camp Shepard and the incredible staff that facilitate the camp’s summer sessions. I am truly glad to have been able to advocate for the camp, the YMCA, and our community throughout the state budget process and to be celebrating these funds today.”

The funding, which was included in the recent FY 2027 state budget that was passed by the Senate and House and signed into law in July, is focused on infrastructure and program improvements at the camp.

“This $100,000 investment is an important step forward for Camp Shepard and our Building Together campaign. Camp Shepard has been a special place for generations of local kids to build confidence, make lasting friendships, and feel a true sense of belonging,” Allard said. “We are grateful to Senator Velis for his advocacy and continued support of the YMCA, and to our state and local leaders for recognizing the importance of investing in a camp that means so much to our community.”
