But it’s not only the living who are attracted to this metro mountain town. The area is known to be quite haunted, with many ghost stories revolving around the Patrick Henry Hotel.

Is the Patrick Henry Hotel Haunted?
According to the many stories about this place, the Patrick Henry Hotel is indeed haunted. Chilling tales include reports of noises in the night, objects moving on their own, and ghostly apparitions.
One of the latter is thought to be the spirit of a young stewardess who was murdered in room 606. These legends have made the hotel a sought-after destination for paranormal enthusiasts.
Hotel History
Completed in 1925, the Patrick Henry was designed by renowned architect William Lee Stoddart in the stately Georgian Revival style. It was an architectural nod to tradition wrapped around the modern promise of a growing city. At the time, Roanoke was booming, earning its nickname as the “Magic City.” For a while, the hotel was a centerpiece of progress.
Its ten floors bustled with traveling salesmen, socialites, and dignitaries. The ballroom glittered with chandeliers and laughter, hosting weddings, galas, and late-night celebrations that echoed through the building’s halls. Even decades later, performers like Rosie O’Donnell and Martin Lawrence brought modern energy to the stage at Down the Hatch, the bar once located on the first floor.
But by the 1960s, the glow had dimmed. The hotel declined, its once-vibrant halls growing quieter. The historic building was restored in the 1990s and transformed into upscale apartments and an event space. Today, it features 132 luxury apartments, multiple businesses, and even a refurbished ballroom.
Hotel Hauntings
But this mixed-use structure has more than old memories filling up the spaces. Employees and visitors alike say that something unnatural lurks in the shadows here, especially after dark. The ballroom, once alive with music and celebration, is now one of the most active and unnerving areas in the building.
Late at night, when the lights are dim and the doors are locked, echoes of another time seem to awaken. Both employees and patrons have reported hearing laughter drift across the empty floor, followed by the unmistakable clink of glasses and silverware.
Some claim to hear entire conversations, muffled and distant, as if a party is still in full swing just beyond our world. But when they turn on the lights, the room is empty and eerily quiet.
On the second floor, an apparition is said to appear at a table near the railing. He’s a man in old-fashioned attire, calmly smoking a pipe. Witnesses say he sits in silence, occasionally tapping his foot against the tablecloth as if waiting for someone who never arrives. Approach him, and he vanishes, leaving behind only the faint scent of tobacco.
An elderly woman, believed to have died within the building, is sometimes heard moving through the halls. Soft footsteps. A door creaking open. The sound of someone sighing in the dark.
Tenants have reported waking in the night to footsteps pacing just outside their bedroom doors: slow and deliberate, stopping just short of entry. Lights flicker without cause. Objects move on their own. In one chilling incident, a heavy speaker was thrown from a table with enough force to echo through the entire floor.
Whatever resides in the old building… it’s not always passive.
Room 606
Among all the stories tied to the Patrick Henry Hotel, none is more infamous than Room 606.
According to legend, during the building’s final years as a hotel, a young stewardess was brutally murdered inside that room. Stabbed to death, her body was discovered in the bathtub, blood staining the space in a way that no renovation could ever fully erase. The killer was never caught.
And the negative energy of that night never left.
Guests who have stayed in Room 606 reported immediate unease: a suffocating cold, electronics flickering wildly, and shadows moving where nothing should be. But some encounters went far beyond that.
One woman claimed she awoke to find a staircase, impossible and out of place, materializing in the corner of the room. From it descended the pale figure of a woman who walked slowly toward the bed and reached out, brushing her fingers through the guest’s hair before vanishing.
Another guest, glancing into the mirror late at night, saw a tall, dark figure standing behind her. When she turned, nothing was there. Terrified, she refused to return to her bed. Instead, she fled to the lobby, where she spent the rest of the night.
Even now, long after the hotel’s transformation, residents and staff avoid speaking too openly about Room 606. Because in a building filled with echoes of the past, that room doesn’t just remember the events that happened. It relives them.
