If you’ve ever wondered why your cravings hit so hard, you’re not alone. Here’s what’s really going on, and healthy suggestions for when one strikes.

First, is it hunger or a craving?

They’re two totally different animals. Hunger says “feed me anything.” When you’re truly hungry, an apple works, a sandwich works, last night’s leftovers work. A craving is much bossier. It says “feed me THAT.” The chocolate chip cookie. The bag of salty chips. Nothing else will scratch the itch.

Where do cravings come from?

Let’s retire the myth: craving chocolate does not mean you’re low on magnesium, and a burger doesn’t mean you’re low on iron. When researchers matched what people craved against their actual nutrient levels, there was no connection. Nada. Zilch.  In fact, your cravings aren’t a shopping list of what you’re missing, but rather a status report on what your body’s been through. Usually it’s one of these:

Where do cravings come from:

  • Reward: you just want the pleasure, crunch, or sweetness.
  • Cue: you saw it, smelled it, or scrolled past it on Instagram or TikTok.
  • Emotional: stress, boredom, sadness, or even celebration.
  • Habit: same couch, same show, same snack (this one’s a biggie).
  • Physical: lack of sleep, shifting hormones, alcohol, or under-fueling.
  • Not enough fuel: you skipped a meal, so you’re genuinely running low.

That said, two cravings really are worth a closer look. A strong pull toward savory food can mean you need protein, so reach for eggs, chicken, turkey, Greek yogurt, or edamame. And an obsessive urge to crunch ice (a real thing, called pagophagia) is linked to iron deficiency, so ask your doctor for a ferritin level.

My 5-step action plan for navigating a craving

Drop the shame. Everybody craves, even nutritionists! The goal isn’t to never crave. It’s to get better at navigating it.

  1. Check the fuel gauge. Running on empty? That’s hunger, not a craving. Eat a real meal or a substantial snack.
  2. Press pause. Give it 5 to 10 minutes. Cravings rise like a wave, peak, and then soften. Most people cave right at the peak, so ride it out.
  3. Name it to tame it. Hungry, tired, stressed, or bored? Just naming it out loud takes a shocking amount of its power away.
  4. Build meals that hold you. Protein and fiber are the standouts. The combo keeps you fuller longer and steadies your blood sugar, so you’re not negotiating with a cookie from a place of chaos.
  5. And sometimes, enjoy the thing. Portion it, plate it, savor it, and move on. A planned, savored treat is a legit part of a healthy life.

Healthier swaps for all types of cravings!

Now, here’s the fun part. Most cravings fall into 5 familiar buckets: sweet, salty/crunchy, starchy/carby, creamy/rich, and savory/umami. Those flavors and textures hit the brain’s reward system the hardest, and a lot of packaged versions are engineered to keep you reaching for more. These swaps give you the same satisfying hit, minus the spiral. Crave on!
