The first of eight shows presented as part of HCC’s Visual & Performing Arts Series, the concert celebrates the lasting legacy of John Coltrane, whose music has inspired generations of artists and listeners worldwide. A big presence for years on the Bay Area jazz scene, JEREMY CARTER has a powerful yet intimate sound, perfectly suited to the music of Coltrane, whom he describes as “very influential on my development, as a saxophonist and as a person.” While his busy career takes him to many musical settings, Carter’s forays into Coltrane are always memorable. “It’s such a pleasure digging into this music, it’s challenging but so logical, and it’s timeless.” The Quintet is an exemplary Bay Area band, featuring trumpeter JAMES SUGGS, pianist JOHN O’LEARY, bassist MAURICIO RODRIGUEZ, and drummer PAUL GAVIN.
