Here’s a delicious musical interlude from the 2025 Redwood Coast Music Festival, brought to you by “Katie and the Lost Boys,” an amusing band name by way of J.M. Barrie, with some poetic license. Katie might not think of herself as Peter Pan, and the evidence here is that the Boys include Jessica King on banjo and vocals, and they don’t seem Lost at all. But enough pedantry. This selection, “a good old good one, “WHISPERING,” belongs to that category of Songs Once So Familiar That Almost No One Performs Them Today (add to this one MY MELANCHOLY BABY, AMONG MY SOUVENIRS, and A SHANTY IN OLD SHANTY TOWN . . . you can think of others). The performance summons up New Orleans dance hall music by way of Ken Colyer, with sweet old tunes given extended ensemble treatments neither exclusively sentimental or rollicking but somehow evoking both.
The band is our Katie, banjo, guitar, vocals, leadership, good ideas; Jessica, banjo, vocals; Colin Hancock, alto saxophone and more; Ryan Calloway, clarinet; Clint Baker, trombone, trumpet, vocals; Benny Amón, drums; Mikiya Matsuda, double bass; Dalton Ridenhour, piano.
I didn’t exaggerate. And what’s more, these inspired musicians will be at this year’s Redwood Coast Music Festival.
We’ll be there. It’s neither too early or too late to make your plans as well. I have the schedule to the left of my keyboard, and the cornucopia causes such vertigo that I can only look at it under a doctor’s care. Look for us in the front row of various venues, exhilarated for sure.
