Crete is one of those rare destinations that truly works for families—whether you’re traveling with toddlers, school-age kids, or teenagers. I personally did this exact 7-day road trip with a one-year-old baby, and that’s precisely why I can confidently say: if it works with a baby, it works for any family.

What makes Crete special is its natural rhythm. Distances are manageable, beaches are gentle, food is fresh and familiar, and children are welcomed everywhere with genuine warmth. This itinerary is intentionally unhurried, balancing beach time, scenic drives, and cultural exploration without ever feeling overwhelming.

Day 1 & 2: Heraklion

An Easy and Welcoming Starting Point

The journey begins in Heraklion, which is ideal for families thanks to its international airport and straightforward road connections. The best advice when arriving with kids is simple: don’t rush. Choose a comfortable hotel, unpack properly, and let everyone settle in.

Heraklion Harbor

That evening, start your Cretan adventure with dinner at Merastri Restaurant. This is the kind of restaurant families dream of while traveling. It’s spacious, relaxed, and deeply rooted in local tradition. Children are clearly welcome, high chairs are not an issue, and the pace of service allows everyone to enjoy the meal without stress. It’s a perfect first taste of Cretan hospitality.

The following day is all about an effortless beach escape. Just a short drive from the city, Ammoudara Beach is ideal for families. The long sandy stretch, shallow water, and excellent facilities make it easy to spend as little or as much time as you want by the sea.

Lunch at Blanco Beachside Restaurant fits seamlessly into the day. Whether you’re traveling with a baby who needs nap breaks or older kids who want to swim longer, the flexibility here is what makes it work so well. You can head back to Heraklion early or stay until sunset.

Day 3: Driving West

Turning the Road Trip into Part of the Fun

On day three, you head west toward Chania. The drive takes around two and a half hours, but with kids, the secret is turning the journey into part of the experience.

Kolatsos Beach

A wonderful stop along the way is Kolatsos Beach, Kalyves. It’s calm, scenic, and feels wonderfully local. Lunch at Taverna Pandesia is relaxed and generous, exactly what families need mid-journey. Kids can stretch their legs, play by the water, and parents can enjoy authentic Cretan food without feeling rushed.

By mid-afternoon, you arrive in Kato Daratsos, a wonderful base for families. It’s quieter than Chania Old Town, easy to navigate, and close to some of the best beaches in western Crete.

Day 4: Golden Beach

Effortless Beach Days for Every Age

Staying in Kato Daratso means immediate access to Golden Beach (Paralia Hrisi Akti), a beach that truly works for everyone. Soft sand, shallow water, and easy access make it perfect for younger children, while older kids have plenty of space to swim and play.

Beach days here are wonderfully flexible. You can come and go easily around naps, meals, or energy levels, something that makes a huge difference when traveling as a family.

One standout meal during your stay is at Sterna Authentic Greek Cuisine. It’s traditional, unfussy, and incredibly welcoming to families. The food is fresh and comforting, and the atmosphere —set in a spacious garden— is calm enough to enjoy a proper meal.

Day 5: Elafonisi Beach

Iconic, Beautiful, and Family-Friendly

No Crete itinerary feels complete without a visit to Elafonisi Beach. The drive from Chania takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, but it’s absolutely worth it. I did this day trip with a one-year-old, and it couldn’t have gone more smoothly.

The shallow lagoons and soft pink-tinged sand create a calm, safe environment for children of all ages. Packing water, snacks, and some light food for the beach helps keep the day relaxed, and arriving early makes parking, shade, and beach time much easier.

Instead of eating at the beach, plan a late lunch on the return drive through the mountains to avoid crowds. The road is dotted with traditional taverns and small kiosks selling local honey, olive oil, and raki—perfect for spontaneous stops. We ate at I Mili Restaurant, a peaceful, family-friendly spot surrounded by greenery that felt like a reward after a long beach morning.

Day 6: Chania Old Town

Culture at a Gentle Pace

After several beach focused days, exploring Chania Old Town offers the perfect change of scenery. The Venetian harbor is stroller friendly, colorful, and lively without being overwhelming, especially in the morning when everything feels calmer and easier with kids.

Old Venetian Port of Chania

This is the ideal spot for souvenir shopping, with small local stores selling olive wood items, ceramics, and regional products. Taking a break by the harbor with a frappé while enjoying the views of Chania harbor is part of the charm and a lovely way to slow the day down.

Lunch at Manos Taverna is a highlight. Tucked away from the busiest streets and with beautiful views to the marina (Neo Chora), it is relaxed and welcoming, making it perfect for families who want traditional seafood without feeling rushed.

Day 7: Back to Heraklion

An Easy Farewell

On the final day, you return to Heraklion, closing the loop of your Cretan road trip. By then, the drive feels familiar and relaxed, which is exactly what you want when traveling with kids.

Church of Saint Titus, Heraklion

If you have a bit of flexibility, I highly recommend staying one last night in Heraklion or near the airport instead of flying the same day. This is what we did, and it made everything easier. After returning the car, we spent the afternoon strolling around the city center, something we had not done at the beginning of the trip, and enjoyed a calm dinner before resting.

Staying nearby the airport meant an unrushed start to the day and a smooth flight home, ending the trip on the same gentle note it began.

Useful Tips for a Smooth Road Trip

  • Crete is genuinely family friendly and easy to navigate with children of any age.

  • Renting a car is essential. Choose one with enough space and proper child seats for a smoother experience.

  • Distances are manageable, but plan extra time for snack breaks, scenic stops, and spontaneous beach pauses.

  • Bring a lightweight stroller that is easy to fold and carry. Many Greek towns have uneven pavement and steps, but comfort for long walks and naps is just as important.

  • For beach days, arrive early, especially in summer. It is easier to park, find shade, and enjoy a calmer atmosphere.

  • While many beaches rent umbrellas, a compact beach tent can be very helpful for babies and younger kids.

  • Always pack water and snacks, particularly for longer drives like the one to Elafonisi.

  • Dining out with kids in Crete is easy and relaxed. Tavernas are welcoming, high chairs are common, and meals are meant to be enjoyed slowly.

  • Embrace the slower pace. Crete is about enjoying time together rather than rushing through sights, making it an ideal destination for family travel.

Crete is a vast island with far more to explore than can fit into a single trip, especially when traveling as a family. This road trip is just a starting point. There are still incredible places waiting for another visit, from the turquoise waters of Balos Beach to the historic ruins of Knossos Palace and the remote charm of Loutro. Crete is the kind of destination that naturally draws you back, and this itinerary is a prove that exploring the island as a family can be not only manageable, but deeply enjoyable and truly memorable.
