Explore The 'Train Of The Future' At King's Cross

Windows invite you to glimpse into the future.

Scamp of a 'train of the future'
'Windows' will allow you to see into the future of train travel.

Usually a 'Train of the Future' at King's Cross station means that it's leaving 52 minutes after it was supposed to.

But on Wednesday 30 July-Friday 1 August 2025 — as part of ongoing Railway 200 celebrations — LNER are inviting people to experience a free interactive pop-up, promising a 'glimpse into what the next 50 years of train travel could look like'.

The crystal ball gazing involves various screens moonlighting as train windows, showing 'what the future of train travel might entail'. They've been put together with the help of applied futurist, Tom Cheesewright, along with the thoughts and hopes of train passengers, asked what they would most like to see in half a century's time. These include floor-to-ceiling windows for 360 degree views (we'd settle for a guaranteed window seat), faster and more sustainable travel times and odourless food. HS2 would be nice too, but let's at least keep this semi-realistic.

Anyway, sounds like a good way to while away 15 minutes while waiting for your delayed train.
