When I saw barn jackets trending this year, I couldn’t help but laugh. Every single one of my brothers owns a traditional Carhartt coat, but not because they were chasing fashion. They grew up wearing them for practical reasons. I grew up on a small farm in Utah, where barn jackets were essential for moving waterlines, tossing bales of hay, and working with horses in very cold winter weather. My brothers would definitely roll their eyes at me writing a post about how to style a barn jacket. But hey, I’ll admit it, they’re far more outdoorsy than I am.

Still, I know a good wardrobe staple when I see one, and barn jackets are worth a spot in your closet. And I’m actually regretting not stealing one of their Carhartt jackets when I had the chance on my last visit home.

My Favorite Barn Jackets:

If you’re ready to add one, you can’t go wrong with classics:

All of these offer the classic oversized fit, practical pockets, and durable cotton or waxed finishes that make barn jackets so versatile. Or, of course, you can opt for an authentic Carhartt jacket (or one that’s “reworked and vintage” for a hefty markup).

How to Style a Barn Jacket

With Creamy Neutrals

A barn jacket instantly softens when paired with light, creamy neutrals. Think ivory sweaters (I love this cream knit polo from Amazon), oatmeal trousers, or off-white jeans like the Pistola ones I’m wearing in the images above. Add leather loafers like the Sam Edelman Loraine loafers, or ankle boots and a scarf, and suddenly a workwear piece looks elevated enough for brunch or errands.

With a Midi Dress

The structured, slightly oversized shape of a barn jacket surprisingly balances beautifully with the femininity of a midi dress. Grab a cotton or floral print dress like this, layer on a corduroy-collar jacket like the Barbour Wax Jacket, and finish with boots. This mix feels both practical and polished, and it helps transition a summery dress to fall in a modern, on-trend way.

With a Mini Skirt or Dress

If you want something unexpected, throw your barn jacket over a mini dress or skirt. The contrast between the rugged jacket and a shorter hemline feels playful. Pair it with knee-high boots or tights and Chelsea boots like these from Nordstrom to make the outfit look intentional. I’m envisioning this Veronica Beard Barn Jacket paired with this chestnut mini skirt from Tuckernuck and these Sam Edelman Knee-High Boots.

Go Classic

Sometimes, the best way to wear a barn jacket is the way it was intended: with jeans, a flannel (I’d grab a classy flannel like this one from Frank & Eileen), and boots. This combination has been around forever because it works. The relaxed fit and flannel lining were made for layering, and you can’t go wrong with a casual, Americana-inspired look.

Unconventional

Want to push the boundaries? Style your barn jacket with tailored trousers, sleek sneakers, or even over an all-black outfit for a polished-meets-casual look. Grab black trousers like these from Quince, and throw on this $19 black basic body-skimming tee and white sneakers – here’s a roundup of my favorites. The durable fabric and snap closures on the barn jacket make it an eye-catching contrast to more polished pieces.

Where Did the Barn Jacket Trend Come From?

Barn jackets were never designed for fashion – they were built for work. Originally popular with farmers, hunters, and horsemen, they became mainstream when brands like Barbour, Carhartt, and L.L.Bean started to merge function with style. Fashion houses picked up on the relaxed fit, corduroy collars, and timeless durability, and suddenly, what was once pure utility became a street-style staple (and for that I’m grateful).

What Exactly Is a Barn Jacket?

A barn jacket is a durable cotton or waxed cotton coat, usually cut in a relaxed fit with snap closures, oversized patch pockets, and corduroy details at the collar or cuffs. Many are flannel-lined for warmth. They’re made to be lived in – whether that’s actually in a barn or just layered into your everyday wardrobe.

Final Thoughts

Barn jackets may have started on the farm (especially in my life!), but today they’re right at home in city streets and coffee shops too. It’s one of those rare pieces that truly blends timeless style with practicality.
