I work as the office admin, not the yard floor, but you don’t need a year in this job before you notice that: Nissan Leafs get treated differently. Right now, we’ve got twelve old & damaged Leafs sitting outside, well away from the rest of the cars we’ve taken in. They’ve been there for a while, and they’ll stay there until they’re dealt with properly.
Every other car that comes through has a fairly predictable path: fluids drained, anything resellable stripped out, then it goes to the crusher. A Leaf couldn’t come in this pattern completely.
It's not the car, it's what's underneath it
I didn’t understand why at first. A Leaf looks like any other small hatchback sitting in the yard. It’s what’s built into the floor of it that changes everything: a large lithium-ion battery pack, running at several hundred volts, spread across most of the underside of the car.
That’s a different kind of risk from anything else we handle. If a pack like that gets crushed, punctured, or damaged the wrong way, it can short internally and go into thermal runaway, the cells heat up rapidly, and it can catch fire quickly. Not the kind of fire you’d get from a damaged engine or fuel line either. Lithium battery fires burn hotter, can reignite after they look like they’re out, and don’t put out easily with normal gear. In a yard full of other vehicles and fuel residue, that’s not a risk anyone here is willing to take casually.
So a Leaf doesn’t get lined up with the rest. It goes to its own space outside, away from other stock, and stays there until it’s been through the right hands.
Why the older ones aren't the "safer" ones
You’d assume an older Leaf, with a battery that’s had years to wear down, would actually be less of a concern by now. From what I’ve picked up being around this for a year, it tends to be the opposite. An older pack has usually gone through more charge cycles and more wear, and that makes it less predictable, not more stable. A tired battery isn’t a calmer battery; it’s just one we know less about, which is exactly why it gets treated with more caution, not less.
What happens to it isn't something we handle ourselves
This part I can be straightforward about because it’s outside what we do: we don’t remove or process the battery pack in-house. That job goes to a specialist recycler who’s set up to handle it safely. Until that recycler deals with the pack, the car just sits separated, waiting, which is exactly why those two Leafs are still parked outside rather than moving through the yard like everything else.
Once the battery’s been dealt with by the people equipped to do it, the rest of the car goes back into the normal process, drained, stripped, and crushed, same as any petrol car we take in.
What this means if you're scrapping a Leaf
If you’re bringing in an old Leaf, it’s worth asking whoever you’re calling how they handle the battery. If a yard doesn’t ask about it, doesn’t separate EVs from the rest of their stock, and quotes it exactly like a petrol car, that’s not a good sign; it usually means they haven’t thought about what’s underneath it.
It’s also part of why a Leaf doesn’t always scrap for what you’d expect compared to a similar-aged petrol car. The extra handling and the specialist collection all factor into it, even when the car itself looks like it’s worth about the same.
