genre: contemporary adult fictionWhen Kyle finds out that his dad is in the hospital, he knows that the right thing to do is to get back to his hometown and help out.  He KNOWS that's what he should do, so he's going to do it.  But going home can be messy, especially when you leave the way that Kyle did.  The hardest part is that Kyle's ex-wife Casey is still there, in the home they'd shared, and even though everything is different now, he still has a lot to learn - and so does she.Sometimes I want to read a good family drama.  And that's really all this is - the story of one little family and what happened to them.  But of course, rarely is a family just an island - there are extended family members and neighbors and friends and community members who are all impacted when families fall apart for one reason or another.  I liked how we get to watch both Kyle and Casey realize how their behavior was part of a bigger cycle of pain and hurt.  There is a hockey storyline in here that I wasn't sure about at first and although it ended up being predictable - I still ended up liking it and how it added to the narrative. There is a lot of pain and hurt here, but it is told in a really relatable and gentle way.    I'm not sure I'd always be in the mood for this, but I'm rounding my 3.5 stars up to four because of how it caught my attention this wintery season.
