Grappling with Madama Butterfly Today: Representation, Reclamation, Re-imagination

In collaboration with Confluence Concerts, AO is pleased to announce this two-day symposium celebrating the premiere of Teiya Kasahara’s 笠原貞野 (they/them) new film The Butterfly Project: The Ballad of Chō-Chō San and the Canadian Opera Company’s planned 2022 production of Madama Butterfly, which calls attention to the problematic nature of this opera in today’s environment of growing cultural awareness.The film will be presented without charge on Confluence Concert's YouTube channel, however advance registration is required for the artist talk back on February 11, and the panel discussions on February 12.FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 117:00 - 9:00 PMPremiere of Teiya Kasahara’s 笠原貞野 The Ballad of Chō-Chō San, with a panel discussion featuring Dr. Kunio Hara (Associate Professor of Music History, University of South Carolina), and an online reception with artist talk back.SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1210:00 AM - 1:00 PMThree panel discussions with artists, directors, creators and academics from Canada and the US exploring Puccini's beautiful but troublesome work.The symposium is co-presented by Confluence Concerts, Amplified Opera, the Canadian Opera Company, the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto, and the Humanities Initiative at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto.
