If you love the look and feel of a Minky Couture blanket or Lola Blankets, but not the price tag, you can sew your own version at home in an afternoon. This tutorial uses Shannon Fabrics Cuddle Cut precuts, so there’s no cutting involved, just two pieces of fabric, a straight seam, and a whole lot of cozy.

What You'll Need

2 Shannon Fabrics Cuddle Cut precuts (2 yards each). I used the color Champagne.
Gorilla tape
Straight pins
Sewing machine with a walking foot (I use the Baby Lock Crescnedo sewing machine)
Clips
Thread

Step 1: Lay Out Your First Precut

Place one Cuddle Cut precut on a flat surface and smooth it out. Tape down the corners and sides to keep it from shifting. I used Gorilla tape for this. Make sure the right side, the fuzzy, cozy side, is facing up.

Step 2: Add the Second Precut

Place the second precut on top, right side down, so the fuzzy sides are facing each other. This is what allows you to flip the quilt right side out later with the seam hidden on the inside.

Step 3: Pin the Layers Together

Pin around the entire quilt, placing pins close together and about 1 1/2 inches from the edge. Cuddle fabric shifts easily, so closely spaced pins make a big difference when it’s time to sew.

Step 4: Sew Around the Edges

Sew around the quilt using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. I recommend using a walking foot for this step. Cuddle fabric is thick and plush, and a walking foot helps feed both layers through your machine evenly so you don’t end up with puckering or shifting.

Leave a 4 inch opening along one side. Don’t sew this section closed yet, you’ll need it to turn the quilt right side out.

Step 5: Remove the Pins

Once you’ve sewn all the way around, remove every pin. Check carefully. You don’t want to leave any pins inside the quilt.

Step 6: Turn the Quilt Right Side Out

Reach through the 4 inch opening and pull the quilt right side out. Take your time here. Cuddle fabric is soft and a little heavy, so this step works best with some patience.

Step 7: Close the Opening

Use clips to hold the 4 inch opening closed. Sew it shut with a 1/2 inch seam.

Step 8: Quilt It (Optional)

At this point, your quilt is finished and ready to use. If you’d like some extra structure to keep the layers from shifting over time, sew a few straight lines from side to side across the quilt.
