After Team India won the Women’s World Cup 2025, just about everyone felt that only five teams in the Women’s Premier League is not enough. There might have been a few ecstatic fans, who would have thought, that the BCCI would bring the sixth team in WPL 2026 or 2027 itself.

WPL to get 6th team by 2028

But that is not going to be the case. If ex-India cricketer and 2017 Women’s World Cup finalist Veda Krishnamurthy is to be believed, then the sixth team in WPL might happen in 2028 only. In an Instagram video uploaded on Saturday, she spoke at length about it.

She said, “Sixth team in IPL, you heard it right. There is going to be an addition in WPL, but not this year, it is going to happen in 2028. What this means to this mega auction, which will be happening on the 27th of November, is that the cycle is only going to be for two years.”

The 33-year-old added, “the addition of one team gives an opportunity to a lot of other players.. I felt that there has been a lot of good players who have missed out on making it to the WPL, only because of five teams. And this is a great news, that this is going to happen. It will be in sync with the men’s mega auction. So, the three years cycle will start from 2028.”

Of course, there is no official confirmation on this, but one cannot rule out the possibility of the next team in WPL being added in 2028. Meanwhile, just a couple of days back, all the franchises announced their retention lists. One of the most shocking exclusions was that of all-rounder Deepti Sharma from the UP Warrirorz side.

The likes of Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh were all retained by their teams. Out of the foreign top players, DC did not retain their regular captain Meg Lanning.
