F1: The Movie: An Ambitious Sequel?

F1, the most glamorous motorsport, opens its door to Hollywood royalty, and what comes out is the most successful motorsport movie to be showcased on the big screen. Critically acclaimed by fans and viewers alike, ‘F1: The Movie’ raised over $600 million in the box office. The film’s success has now opened the door to a sequel.

But what do we know so far about this potential sequel? Let’s find out…

Bruckheimer: “We’re working on a Sequel”

Jerry Bruckheimer has told the BBC that ‘F1: the Movie’ is officially working on a sequel. As to when we will hear any confirmation of a cinematic release date, it remains to be announced. Since the release of ‘F1 the Movie’, Bruckheimer has been working on other film/television projects, including Heat 2, Boston Blue, and F1: The Movie 2.

So, in the midst of it all, Bruckheimer’s attention towards a sequel for motorsports’ iconic four-wheel racing has been divided, but not forgotten.

Bruckheimer also confirmed that he is working on a potential sequel to Days of Thunder, starring the iconic Tom Cruise, reprising his role as Cole Trickle in the first adaptation back in 1990. However, there is more to this reprisal than meets the eye.

F1 – Days of Thunder Crossover?

A motorsport crossover with NASCAR and Formula 1 has generated intrigue amongst the fans. Bruckheimer has produced both Days of Thunder and ‘F1: the Movie’ while his directing partner Joseph Kosiniski, revived Tony’s Scott adaptation of Top Gun with, Top Gun Maverick.

On paper, while both Kosinski and Bruckheimer have worked in tandem on these projects, there is no official confirmation to suggest that a crossover between the two films (Days of Thunder and ‘F1 the Movie’) is possible. As this currently appeals to certain online communities, there is no evidence to suggest that this is true.

Bruckheimer confirmed at the ‘F1: the Movie’ Premiere back in June 2025 that he is working with Tom Cruise in creating a sequel for Days of Thunder but not revolving around the world of Formula 1.

What does ‘F1 the Movie 2’ need to cover?

After a successful and emotional story told about the young racing prodigy, Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt). The American driver rejoins the more technical and complex world of Formula 1 after a horrific crash at the Spanish Grand Prix in 1990. A story heavily inspired by the British Racing Driver, Martin Connelly, who crashed in Jerez during Qualifying. Hitting the barrier at 160mph. 

As the film ended openly, there is possibility for expansion into story lines that require more focus and attention. One example includes, the inception of APXGP and shedding more light on how Rubén Cervantes (Javier Bardem) transitioned from racing driver to team owner of APXGP. Providing more depth and character to APXGP.

A final addition, could venture around Sonny’s younger team-mate Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) taking a more central role within APXGP as well as the film itself. As we witnessed at the end of the first film Sonny passes the torch to Joshua, emphasising that the team will rally behind Pearce.

Overall, ‘F1: The Movie 2’ remains in the early stages of development, with speculation tipping the scales from factual information. Moreover, from its box office success, creative talent returning and multiple story avenues yet to be explored, the sequel offers genuine potential.

Whether it delves into APXGP’s inception or creating fresh new rivalries, fans and viewers have all the more reason to remain excited.
