Most casual fans will look at the Vikings and Buccaneers showdown in Week 3 and assume that the Vikings clearly have the upper hand since they’re 2-0 and Tampa Bay is 0-2. While Minnesota probably has the upper hand and all of the momentum in the world, the Buccaneers do have one thing going for them: their backs are against the wall.
There’s something to be said about having to win a football game and burning the boats behind you. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers feel like they’re walking into a must-win matchup against Minnesota in Week 3, after they’re owning two start has put them behind, not only in the NFC, but their division as well. Luckily, for them, the NFC South isn’t the toughest division, so even if they fall behind a good amount, the whole thing could still be winnable for them. The bad news is that the Carolina Panthers actually look very good, the Saints are solid, and the Atlanta Falcons have seemingly awoken.
Vikings Must Fend Off a Team That Can’t Lose

Since the Tampa Bay Buccaneers know they can’t afford to lose this game, they’ll have to take the driver’s seat and force their will on the Minnesota Vikings. Thankfully, the Vikings have one of the best defensive minds in football to help prevent this. Minnesota will be relying heavily on Brian Flores, as they always do. He will have to fend off Baker Mayfield, a solid veteran quarterback who knows how to pick apart defenses when he needs to. These are the offenses that Flores seems to struggle most against, which could play into the “trap game” feel of Week 3.
Even so, this is a game that the Minnesota Vikings should absolutely win. They’re simply the better team in most areas, and have been playing very good complementary football since halftime of their victory over the Green Bay Packers. The Buccaneers, on the other hand, were busy last Sunday losing a game to the Cleveland Browns and giving up almost 250 passing yards on the way to doing so. Sure, 250 yards isn’t some banner day in the NFL, but it sure is a notable mark for the 2026 version of Deshaun Watson.
With the Buccaneers giving up some serious leaks in the secondary, it could provide a friendly opportunity for QB Kyler Murray to really get his feet wet within the Vikings’ offense. Not only was he robbed of a lot of reps after being knocked out against Green Bay, but he also had to split reps with J.J. McCarthy during the team’s “open QB competition” during the offseason.
Vikings Can’t Sleepwalk

The one thing that the Vikings can’t do is overlook the Buccaneers. They learned this lesson from the Green Bay Packers earlier this week when they got absolutely dominated by the Atlanta Falcons in their own house.
Of course, we can’t compare two completely different teams to the Vikings and Buccaneers, but it serves as a reminder: 0-2 teams are hungry, and that one just so happened to also be from the NFC South.
The Buccaneers aren’t the Falcons, and the Vikings certainly aren’t the Packers. Here’s to hoping they don’t feel like making the same mistake.
