Shiok Burger has just opened its latest outlet at Lot One Shoppers' Mall, so I went to check them out on their opening day.Browsing through the menu on the self-service kiosk, I decided upon the crispy mala chicken burger. I could not believe my eyes when I look at the price.For $5, I could get myself a mala chicken burger... with a drink included!I had to admit that the packaging is very eye catching.The red sleeve is printed with adorable motifs which can also be found on their paper cup.All this while, I had thought Shiok Burger is a fast-food chain from China.Well, who could blame me for thinking so?I first come across this brand inside Scarlette at Westgate that had a PRC staff running the counter. With a Panda as its logo and having the mala burger as their signature burger, everything screams nothing but China to me.Little did I know that this brand actually originated right here in Singapore!The bun is the typical Chinese flatbread kind with a nice chewy texture.Since I took some time taking photos of the burger, the sauce made the bun go limp.You might be interested to know that they made the buns themselves instead of outsourcing from third-party suppliers. This fact alone earned them my nod of approval.For the price point, they did not opt for chicken patty which they could probably get cheaper in bulk. However, what I had is a boneless chicken thigh (read: pure muscle meat) slathered with mala sauce. Beneath the crispy exterior of the thigh, is succulent, tender meat.The mala level is a 小辣 (mild) for I could taste neither the ma nor the la. Instead, I believe I tasted cumin but, I could be wrong though. I love cumin so the flavor excites me.They were pretty lavish with the sauce which dripped all over my fingers.
