Consultancy Supports Completion of £107M National Rehabilitation Centre

Leading property and construction consultancy, EDGE, has completed work on the country’s first NHS National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) – a £107million facility operated by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Located on the 365-acre Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate at Rempstone, alongside the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC), the NRC has now reached completion and opens its doors to patients this month.

With seventy beds, the state-of-the-art centre is designed to help people regain independence following serious illness or injury. Patients will benefit from ground breaking technology, including the most comprehensive robotics suite in the NHS and the UK’s first 360-degree hoist, which helps patients learn to walk again.

The NRC’s strategic co-location with the DMRC will enable collaborative learning and shared access to facilities, such as hydrotherapy and immersive virtual reality environments. While the Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate also offers a 5km trim trail, hand-cycle track, fishing lake and golf course to complement physical and mental wellbeing during recovery.

Beyond patient care, the NRC will lead rehabilitation research and innovation, working with a network of twenty-six universities and establishing an NRC Academy for training and education.

The NRC forms part of the Government’s New Hospital Programme (NHP) and was amongst the first wave of projects to progress.

European Healthcare Design Awards

Sustainability was at the heart of the project, with EDGE supporting the delivery of the NHS’s first operationally carbon-neutral building to support its 2045 Net Zero goal. The building uses solar panels and air source heat pumps and has earned industry recognition, winning the Constructing Excellence Midlands ‘Net Zero Award’ and receiving Highly Commended at the European Healthcare Design Awards.

EDGE delivered a range of specialist services from its Nottingham office. These included NEC3 Project Management, which ensured smooth delivery by coordinating design teams, contractors and stakeholders, as well as providing strategic advice, managing contracts, and ensuring budgets and quality standards were met.

Additional support included a dedicated NEC3 Supervisor, technical programme assistance and innovative digital services such as drone surveys during construction.
