Why Strength Training Belongs in Every Balanced Fitness Programme
At Stede Court Private Fitness Retreat, we believe in holistic, sustainable health which means finding balance. While many associate fitness with pounding the pavement or high-octane cardio classes, strength training is just as essential for building a resilient, capable body. When paired with cardiovascular work (both high and low impact) and regular mobility or flexibility training, resistance-based exercise becomes a powerful tool for health and longevity.
Strength training doesn’t always mean heavy barbells or intimidating gym machines. Your own body weight is an accessible and effective form of resistance — think squats, planks, lunges, or tricep dips. Resistance bands, kettlebells and free weights are also wonderfully versatile, allowing you to challenge your body in a controlled, functional way. At our fitness retreat, we incorporate all these tools to help guests find what suits their body best.
Why is strength work so important? Beyond aesthetics, it supports joint health, protects bone density, and improves posture. Strong muscles also boost metabolism, making everyday movements such as climbing stairs to lifting shopping easier and more efficient. For those over 40, preserving muscle mass becomes particularly vital, as we naturally begin to lose it with age.
However, strength work shouldn’t live in isolation. Cardio, both fast-paced (like intervals or hill walking) and slower, steady-state sessions helps build heart and lung endurance, regulates mood, and improves sleep. And flexibility, often underestimated, allows muscles and joints to move freely and safely, reducing the risk of injury and enhancing recovery.
A well-rounded and balanced programme doesn’t over-emphasise one element. It blends strength, cardio and flexibility in a way that suits your body, lifestyle and goals for overall wellbeing. Wellbeing is exactly what we focus on at Stede Court: personalised, restorative fitness that builds strength from the inside out, with space to breathe, move and thrive.
