When it comes down to it, it’s easy – The hunter shoots the shot and the Broadhead does the quick and humane killing. But there seems to be hundreds of different broadheads on the market to choose from with dozens of variations to add to the confusion. The best thing bowhunters can do is understand each type of broadhead and learn its different features.

BROADHEAD TYPES

Fixed-blade broadheads have blades that are connected at both the front and back along the broadhead body. None of the parts of the broadhead are moving parts. The strength of a fixed-blade broadhead is greater than any other broadhead type because of its sturdy rigid build.

The other type of broadheads are called mechanical broadheads which are characterized by the moving parts involved. Early mechanical broadheads required the blades to flipped “backward” in order to open. With their large cutting diameter, these broadheads are increasingly popular.

BROADHEAD STRENGTH

Sorry to break it to you, not every shot can land right on a vital organ. Broadheads have the tough job of getting through shoulders, tough skin and ribs. Using a broadhead that isn’t particularly strong can cause issues in taking down your game. Strength begins with choosing the best materials. The best points are made from carbon/chromium components. Fixed-blade heads tend to be better in strength because of their design. Choose heads made by quality top-grade materials like the Spectre Broadhead which has a Strong 7075 Machined Ferrule and a hardened Carbon Steel tip with an aerodynamic 4-face chisel.

CHECK OUT THE SPECTRE BROADHEAD: REVOLUTIONARY MAGNETIC BLADE TECHNOLOGY HOLDS BLADES CLOSED UNTIL IMPACT, CREATING MASSIVE ENTRY AND MAX PENETRATION.

BLADE SHARPNESS

It is important that your arrow hits deep into the animal’s body to create heavy blood loss or strike a vital organ. A broadhead’s penetration potential depends on a variety of things. A bow’s draw weight, draw length, blade angle, cutting diameter, and arrow weight all play a role. But the most important aspect is blade sharpness. Select a brand of broadheads that consistently include very sharp blades. Sharpness will determine how well the broadhead can pierce through the skin and bone of the animal.

BROADHEAD CUTTING DIAMETER

When a broadhead pierces the animal, it should cut a big wound opening. This is important to cause more damage to organs and create large blood loss in order to make the kill swift. The key is to find a broadhead that can create a large wound but also penetrate deep. Differences in bow setups and arrow weights have big impact on penetration and diameter of opening.

These are the main aspects to consider when selecting a broadhead. Try our Spectre Broadheads which include 4 broadheads for the price of 3 at only $44.99. No O-Rings, Lock Collars or Rubber Bands. The sweep-back sharp blade are designed for max penetration. Opens every time guaranteed!
