What are Starfish?
A starfish is a marine invertebrate, belonging to the Phylum Echinodermata. Most starfish have five arms, though some species have up to forty or more. They are typically found in tropical and temperate marine waters around the world. They range in color from greens and blues to browns and oranges. Starfish have a firm but rubbery exoskeleton, allowing them to move quickly and easily. The move with tube feet located between the spines on their arms. As predators, starfish feed on bivalves, small fish and other invertebrates, using their arms to capture prey and move it closer to their mouths. These unique animals are able to regenerate lost arms although, in most cases, if more than half the original body mass is lost, it cannot survive. In addition to their physical characteristics, starfish have a variety of non-feeding behaviors, including courtship and territorial interactions. In general, starfish provide an intriguing and important ecological contribution to their environment, from controlling populations to acting as secondary scavengers to keep them healthy.
