What are Reindeer?
Reindeer, also known as Caribou, are large Ungulates native to Arctic and Sub-Arctic regions. They have long fur coats and thick hooves that help them navigate the snow and ice. Reindeer are a unique species of deer that are widely known for their association with Christmas and Santa Claus. Reindeer are mainly found in northern regions across North America, Europe and Asia. They live in herds ranging from a few dozen individuals to a few thousand. They feed on grasses, lichens and moss primarily, but may also eat mushrooms, leaves and other edible things. In the winter, reindeer migrate towards tundra regions, covering great distances in search of food. One of their most distinctive features is the unique antlers that males and females possess. Male reindeer also have special enlarged glands on their noses that are used to attract females during mating season. Reindeer possess remarkable abilities such as being able to run long distances and jump high obstacles, swim, and navigate through snow and harsh climates. Reindeer have become synonymous with the Christmas Season and are a source of joy and wonderment for all.
