The aircraft in question is C-GMAS which is a DHC-6-300 Twin Otter on wheel skis, that was performing a private charter flight from Yellowknife to Lac de Gras carrying eight passengers and two crew members in support of winter road construction activities.

The aircraft was forced to land in a remote area approximately 16 kilometres southeast of the Diavik Diamond Mine receiving substantial damage at 12:45 p.m. local time.

During the landing two occupants suffered moderate to serious injuries with six others receiving minor injuries.

On the evening of the incident the Canadian National Defense Joint Rescue Center reported that a Hercules C-130 despite poor weather conditions was able to drop three parachutes as well as supplies for the passengers and crew to get through the night to then be rescued the following day.

A spokesperson for Canada’s TSB said, “JRCC Trenton deployed assets and 3 search and rescue technicians parachuted into the area to provide medical and survival assistance overnight. Additionally, emergency response personnel were deployed from the Diavik Diamond Mine located approximately 7 NM to the NW; they arrived on scene the evening of the accident. All personnel were recovered from the accident site the next day and received the appropriate medical attention.”

At this time it is not yet known what had caused the aircraft to make a forced landing and a thorough investigation is currently on-going.
