A late-week surprise from last Friday brings a familiar name back into the fold today. Aaron Dooley’s excellent Island House album The International Association of: led to the creation of a band of the same name, formed to tour the album around its release. The band hasn’t made it into the studio proper until now, but their first tryst to tape is a great reminder of the excellent ensemble that Dooley brought together. This month the band releases an exploratory track, a seance at the seams of prog, jazz, and psych; awash in the cosmic crush. Dooley’s bass anchors, but the band brings heat through Aesop Adams’ guitars, scorching throughout “Later Days.” Equally essential are the fraught and ferocious sax lines from Ty Piña who seems set to burst through the boundaries of the tape. The new single is out now, perhaps a single curio, perhaps the start of something more. Either way, this is some necessary listening for July’s ears.
