As we start the year off it is important to think of yourself as you set your goals for your crochet in 2025. I love crocheting, but most of my projects are for others. This is a great reminder, to take an afternoon, or a week and make something for yourself. To help with some inspiration I have added this pattern to a fun blog hop that is running all of January 2025.

Materials Needed for the Chunky Herringbone Knotted Cowl

  • Crochet Hook size L (8.00 mm)
  • 150 yards of Super Bulky (#5 weight)yarn
    • Sample made from Wibra Cato yarn / color: 6091 (3 skeins)
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors
  • Measuring Tape

Stitches Used & Abbreviations

  • Ch = Chain
  • Sc = Single Crochet
  • Hdc = Half Double Crochet
  • HbK = Herringbone Knot Stitch (tutorial included in pattern instruction)
  • Whip Stitch – or stitch of choice to seam ends together

Knotted Cowl Size: 7” wide x 32” long/circumference

Chunky Herringbone Knotted Cowl

Gauge:

  • Check your gauge as you crochet the cowl, gauge checks are listed throughout the pattern.
  • If your swatch is too small, try going up one hook size and recheck.
  • If your swatch is too large, try going down one hook size and recheck.

Pattern Notation & Stitch Tutorial:

  • Count the beginning chain as a stitch.
  • The cowl is made as a long flat rectangle piece that is stitched together once the correct length is reached.  

Herringbone Knot Stitch

To work the herringbone knot stitch in the pattern follow the below instructions: yarn over, insert hook and pull up a loop, pull same loop through 1 loop on hook, yarn over, insert hook into same st, pull up a loop, pull same loop through all remaining loops on hook


Herringbone Knotted Cowl Pattern

R1: *Foundation Sc 18, turn (18)

*Note: in place of the foundation sc you may alternatively ch 19, sc in 2nd ch from hook and sc to end, turn (18)

R2: Ch 2 (counts as a hdc), skip 1st st, HbK in next st, [ch 2, skip next 2 sts, HbK in next st], repeat [ ] until 1 st remain, hdc in last st, turn (2 hdc + 6 HbK + 5 ch sps)


R3: Ch 3 (counts as a hdc+ch1), skip first 2 sts, [in ch sp work HbK, ch 2, skip next HbK], repeat [ ] to end, hdc in top of turning ch of prior row, turn (2 hdc + 5 HbK + 6 ch sps)

R4: Ch 2 (counts as a hdc), HbK in ch sp, [ch 2, skip next HbK, HbK in next ch sp], repeat [ ] to end, hdc in top of 2nd ch of turning ch of prior row, turn (2 hdc + 6 HbK + 5 ch sps)

Gauge Check: 7” wide & 2 ¾” high

Repeat R3 & R4 until scarf measures a total of 29 ½”

Final Row: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch across (18), fasten off leaving a long tail of yarn that you can use to sew ends together.

Sewing Ends: Making sure the cowl is not twisted, align row 1 with your final row, use the whip stitch to stitch the rows together.
