Heatwave Wiltshire

Spending a week in a field every year is good for the soul, time out, family, laughter, minimal phone time, sleep, good food, fresh air, the list goes on.  This year however was a little different as we camped through the latest heatwave and goodness me it was hot.  Living in the North East even we have noticed the heat and lack of rain this Summer but the difference to further south was put into stark contrast.  We have always had a rather large fire every evening but we couldn’t take that risk, we always BBQ but not this year.   We noticed the lack of insects, the parched earth and the crops around the field struggling.    I was chilling in the shade with my feet in a bucket of water when the Government Emergency message went off, we all jumped out of our camp chairs, it was bizarre. The highlights were the solar eclipse, being in our field witnessing it was quite surreal, also the shooting stars, I’ve never seen so many, it was quite a treat.   Our favourite places to go that feel like home are always special but also tinged with a little sadness, to see the gardens so crispy and desolate, even Avebury the ground so dry that land had slipped.  It did make me feel a little melancholy knowing that nothing I could do would change anything. Regardless of the climate and the worry that it causes we did have a beautiful time, Wiltshire will always be like a second home for us as a family.
