People living with diabetes usually find it tough to maintain their blood glucose level and I have seen it with my father too. But with a proper diet, healthy lifestyle and medications, he has been able to manage diabetes effectively.

Of all the things, I have learnt as his primary caregiver is that following a healthy lifestyle is non-negotiable and one of the the best way to manage blood glucose levels.

Pillars of Diabetes Management

Over the years, here are 5 things that have helped my father follow and maintain sustainable lifestyle in his diabetes management journey.

1. A Balanced Platter

If you are someone living with diabetes or are a primary caregiver then it is important to follow a balanced diet. While preparing a meal for my father, I focus more on lean proteins and non-starchy veggies.

My nutritionist suggested to divide the platter into 3 parts i.e. quarter part of lean proteins like soya, dal, eggs, chicken, fishes; half part of non-starchy veggies like cucumber, salads, cauliflower, cabbages, broccoli, and beans and the remaining quarter includes carbs like whole grains, millet, rice, wheat, etc. as per the season.

2.  Hydration

My doctor suggested that staying hydrated is crucial for people living with diabetes as losing fluids can lead to dehydration and increase blood glucose levels.4

To stay hydrated, my father relies on water, water-rich vegetables, soup, etc. And one of doctor’s recommendation to include Ensure® Diabetes Care in his regular meal.

Importance of Ensure Diabetes Care

Ensure Diabetes Care is the #1 selling diabetes nutrition drink in the world.1 It is clinically proven to manage blood sugar levels in 4 weeks.2

What convinced me to give Ensure Diabetes Care a try is the Triple Care System3 of high fibre, high-quality protein and 36 nutrients that helps my father manage common diabetes symptoms like tiredness6 better.

3. Workout

Regular physical activity also helps my father to manage his blood glucose levels. Exercises like walking, cycling, swimming, yoga etc. can be included.

It is important to choose a type of exercise that you enjoy. For example, my father enjoys a daily 30-40-minute walk. The walk not only helps him to manage diabetes but also promotes overall physical wellness.

4. Meditation

Sometimes, my father gets overwhelmed because of frequent glucose monitoring after being diagnosed with diabetes. So, I encouraged him to join a meditation club in our locality.

The monthly meetups have helped him to have a better mind and body connection. In fact, he has also taken up reading before bed which helps him with better quality sleep.5

5. Medications and Regular Checkups

Medications and regular checkups are a must for people living with diabetes. My father visits his doctor as advised. The visit helps us to understand the dos and don’ts to keep his blood glucose level in the target range. It also gives opportunities to share the challenges that he may be facing for the right consultation and suggestions.

Our doctor also suggested 1 glass of Ensure Diabetes Care in water to manage blood glucose levels.

Conclusion

Diabetes is a health condition and with proper care and the right lifestyle, it can be managed efficiently. By taking a proactive approach, sustainable lifestyle changes and healthy practices, people living with diabetes can keep their blood sugar level in check and continue to live a healthy lifestyle.

Ensure Diabetes Care has helped my father manage his diabetes better. Consult your doctor to see if it’s the right fit for you.
