I wasn’t all that familiar with Mammut before acquiring the Treeline Light HS Hooded Jacket. The Swiss brand seems better known among climbers and mountaineers for its technical outerwear, climbing ropes, and avalanche gear. Founded in 1862, Mammut has a long history of building equipment designed for serious mountain environments .
The Mammut Treeline Light HS Hooded Men’s jacket is a minimalist 2-layer GORE-TEX hiking hardshell. The travel-friendly rain shell is at home in the city as it is on the trail. Most notably, this lightweight rain shell manages to stay comfortable during active use — a quality I can’t say about every rain jacket in my somewhat sizable collection. Many shells feel clammy and start to become gross once you break a sweat, but the added liner in the Treeline Light does a fantastic job of managing moisture and staying comfortable over time.

Designed for hiking and everyday use, the Mammut Treeline jacket is a windproof and waterproof staple created using technical Gore-Tex fabrics.
It also packs down smaller than many of my other rain jackets — a feature I appreciated enough to select it for a recent trip to Amsterdam, despite having an extensive collection of other shells to choose from. When the skies cleared, it easily squished into my backpack; when the rain returned, it was quick to throw back on and stayed reliably waterproof through hours of walking and train hopping.

It’s also worth noting the low-profile zippered hand warmer pockets. They’re so streamlined I almost didn’t realize they were there. I’m glad to have them, though, as they got a lot of use on my international travel adventures.
Fit and sizing
The jacket has a “Regular” fit. I’m wearing a size medium, but after a year of regular gym workouts to rehab my shoulder after a surgical repair, I’m finding I am starting to need to move up to a large. I’m pleased the medium still works well for me with a full range of movement, and I’m even able to layer a shacket and a light puffy vest under it if needed.

The hood deserves a shoutout as well — it’s well-sized and stays put. During light rain and drizzle, I wore it over a baseball cap and never had issues with it blowing off or feeling awkward.
The Mammut Treeline Light HS Hooded Men’s jacket sells for $289. Learn more at Mammut.com.
