I saw The Prog Mind posted a best of 2025 list and I thought I would do the same, partially because I knew there would be no overlap and because I wasn’t sure how many albums I would even include. Jason likes more music than I do and I am very difficult.
My favorite album of the year is Bioscope – “Gentō.”
It will be my album of the year at the end of the year as well. This album is a masterpiece. Steve Rothery of Marillion and Thorsten Quaeschning of Tangerine Dream with Alex Reeves of Elbow. I bought a pre-release of it from Steve Rothery. The official release is in August.
These are in NO order at all.
A bunch of great albums from Pelagic Records. All of these are instrumental and amazing!
Telepathy – “Transmissions”
Gösta Berlings Saga – “Forever Now”
Hiroe – “Wield”
you, infinite – “you, infinite”
Øresund Space Collective – “Alotta Hella Down in Estrela”
Øresund Space Collective – “Espaço 2”
A band that I’ve gotten WAAAAAAAAAAAAY into lately has a couple of albums out this year. All improv, all instrumental.
Peter Baumann – “Nightfall”
A legend is back with a brand new album that is really dark and foreboding. Well to me it is. GREAT album that fits well with his last one.
The Wildhearts – “Satanic Rites of The Wildhearts”
I love the Wildhearts and this is one of their best. Buy it you, kunce.
Paatos – “Ligament”
It only took 13 years for this one. A bit more avant garde than they’ve been but Mikael Åkerfeldt guests on one track. They are also opening for Opeth in Europe.
Steven Wilson – “The Overview”
I really like this one. I really liked the last one. I didn’t like the two before that.
Motorpsycho – “Motorpsycho”
A double album that proves this band are still a force to be reckoned with.
Brian Eno & Beatie Wolfe – “Lateral”
Brian Eno – “Aurum”
Eno has been busy. I also have “Luminal” but it’s not really grabbing me yet.
echolyn – “TimeSilentRadio II” & “TimeSilentRadio VII”
I have loved this band for 30 years now and these two albums rank up there with anything they’ve done.
Melvins – “Thunderball”
I’ve loved this band for even longer. This is a Melvins album that people who don’t like them may really enjoy.
And more stuff that’s more well known, I guess?
My Morning Jacket – “is”
Katatonia – “Nightmares As Extensions Of The Waking State”
Mogwai – “The Bad Fire”
moe. – “Circle of Giants”
