South African Airways (SAA) has entered into a domestic-only codeshare agreement with privately owned airline, CemAir, in a move aimed at improving air connectivity between major cities and regional destinations across South Africa.
The partnership, announced on Monday, will allow passengers to access routes that are not currently served by SAA’s existing domestic network, thereby expanding travel options within the country.
Unlike SAA’s other codeshare arrangements, which are largely focused on regional and international routes, the new agreement is strictly limited to domestic operations.
Under the deal, both airlines will place their respective codes on selected flights operated by the other, enabling customers to book combined itineraries via the airlines’ official websites, mobile applications and authorised travel agents.
According to the airlines, passengers will enjoy the convenience of single-ticket bookings, seamless flight connections and through-checked baggage across both networks.
CemAir, which has been operating since 2005, currently provides scheduled services linking major urban centres with key regional destinations. Its network includes Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, George, East London, Gqeberha, Margate, Kimberley, Hoedspruit and Mala Mala, using a fleet of regional jets and turboprop aircraft.
SAA Group Chief Executive Officer, Prof. John Lamola, said the partnership would significantly extend the national carrier’s domestic reach.
“Unlike our international codeshare agreements, this partnership is focused on connecting major cities with regional and leisure destinations that were previously beyond SAA’s footprint,” Lamola said.
“By combining our strengths with CemAir, we are offering greater flexibility, convenience and choice to our customers.”
Also speaking, CemAir Chief Executive Officer, Miles van der Molen, noted that the collaboration would create a more connected domestic network, benefiting both business and leisure travellers.
The airlines added that the agreement would provide expanded access to key destinations, smoother travel connections and integrated booking across both carriers’ platforms.
Ticket sales for codeshare flights are expected to commence on January 26, 2026.
