The biggest barrier to students’ comprehension is often word knowledge or vocabulary. The biggest barrier to teachers’ abilities to support students is often understanding the best approach(es) to use in helping students to learn vocabulary.

Our newest Plug & Plays for Explicit Vocabulary and Implicit Vocabulary instruction are designed to support teachers’ ability to understand the two-part approach to vocabulary instruction outlined in the Teach Like a Champion Guide to the Science of Reading and become more confident in their decision making when determining when and how to leverage each approach. When used in tandem, Explicit and Implicit Vocabulary instruction prepares teachers to combat the word knowledge gap and empowers students to make meaning of complex texts. Both Plug & Play sessions strike a balance of pedagogy and practice through analysis of research-backed techniques and videos, strategic planning and practice embedded using teachers’ current curriculum.

Explicit Vocabulary Instruction Plug & Play

The Explicit Vocabulary Plug & Play positions vocabulary to be seen as knowledge – leading to a knowledge-based approach to instruction instead of relying on context clues. Teachers will analyze and practice the two-step approach to Explicit Instruction: Vocabulary Roll Out and Active Practice. This approach allows teachers to efficiently and effectively do a deep dive into the meaning and nuances of 1-2 words that will appear in that day’s reading. Students are then provided with many opportunities for joyful, intentional student practice and application. As a result, students are better equipped to make meaning of complex texts. Students are often “so proud and excited to use their juicy words, which can go a long way in helping [them] love the words they’re using and eventually start to own them.” Check out one of our favorite clips from the Plug and Play of Christine Torres rolling out the word caustic to her fifth graders here:

Implicit Vocabulary Instruction Plug & Play

The Implicit Vocabulary Instruction Plug & Play prepares teachers to efficiently and effectively provide word knowledge while reading. This approach allows teachers to address a higher volume of words allowing for more accurate text comprehension. Using the Plug and Play will help in your PD will help teachers plan for and practice identifying the highest leverage words for Implicit instruction, craft student-friendly definitions and make the important decisions for how they will implicitly teach and how students will engage with the words during reading. Each round of practice leverages a teacher’s upcoming text or lesson to make practice authentic and provide time to grow in confidence and implementation before taking it live with students.
