While some analysts have questioned the opening weekend performance of Masters of the Universe, Amazon MGM Studios appears highly encouraged by the film’s launch and is focusing on the bigger picture rather than just ticket sales.

The live-action adaptation of the beloved franchise opened to an estimated $54 million worldwide, a figure that has sparked debate about whether the film can achieve blockbuster status against its reported production budget. However, Amazon executives are emphasizing that the studio’s goals extend far beyond the theatrical box office.

Amazon MGM’s domestic distribution chief Kevin Wilson addressed the film’s performance in comments to Variety, expressing confidence in both the movie and the studio’s long-term strategy.

“Travis Knight and the entire cast and filmmaking team have delivered something truly special, and this opening is exactly the kind of critical first moment that validates our holistic distribution strategy, building awareness and engagement that will carry well beyond the theatrical window.”

Wilson’s comments highlight Amazon’s unique position in the entertainment industry. Unlike traditional studios that rely heavily on theatrical revenue, Amazon can measure success across multiple platforms, including Prime Video, merchandise, brand awareness, and future franchise opportunities.

The positive reception from audiences and critics has likely contributed to the studio’s confidence. As of this writing, Masters of the Universe holds a strong 67% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes while boasting an impressive 87% audience score. The audience rating, in particular, suggests that moviegoers are embracing He-Man’s return to the big screen even if the opening weekend numbers did not reach the heights some expected.

Directed by Travis Knight, the film marks the franchise’s first live-action theatrical release in nearly four decades and represents a major investment in one of Mattel’s most recognizable brands. Amazon clearly sees the project as more than a single theatrical event, viewing it instead as the foundation for a larger entertainment ecosystem.

Whether Masters of the Universe ultimately becomes a major box office success remains to be seen, but Amazon’s messaging is clear. The studio believes the film’s value extends well beyond ticket sales, and with strong audience reactions, positive word of mouth, and an eventual streaming debut still ahead, the company appears confident that the battle for Eternia is only getting started.
